How we do it.
Our approach to a car build may not be unique but it is exclusive. We only build
one car at a time. That is it - we are focused on you. At the very start of the
project we work with the owner to get a thorough understanding of how the final
vehicle should perform. This sounds obvious but every individual has his or her
own unique interpretation of what a there personal car should be like from the
driver's seat. Some people like brutal straight-line acceleration others like
corner carving while others like a beautiful paint job on an easygoing cruiser.
The performance expectations for acceleration, handling and ride set the framework
for the project.
Most car owners either already have a project car or have the body style in mind.
If not we will help them with some design ideas with vehicles that lend themselves
well to their performance goals. This can be the most exciting part of a project
or the most tedious - depends a lot on the spouse of the vehicle owner! We recommend
reading a lot of magazines or searching a lot of on line forums to find a vehicle
that really gets you excited. You are going to be investing a lot of money in this
car and it is important to us that you love it! It is absolutely important to
understand that buying the best donor car is always cheaper in the long run. A
cheaper car usually ends up with a larger body shop bill. The final vehicle choice
(Corvette, Mustang, 32 Ford) and body style (coupe or convertible) impact the
capabilities and final design of the car. We have to get all the “stuff” to fit
inside the vehicle to meet the owner's performance goals.
Once we understand the owner's performance expectation and the body style we can
develop the plan for the hardware to support these. This hardware includes the
engine, transmission rear end, suspension, chassis modifications, wheels, tires
brakes etc. This laundry list of items is the backbone of the project. Once we
understand all the components we need to fit into the car, we start developing
our strategy to build the car in the proper sequence. The out come of this part
of the project is a basic project plan with all of the major sub assemblies
identified.
After we have inspected the project car and understand all the parts needed to
meet the owners goals we can start to develop a plan for the body also. Depending
on the quality of the donor car and the level of modifications required (tubing the
rear, hidden roll cage etc.) we develop a project plan for the body also. This is
the phase most customers get really excited – picking colors! We like to get the
car started and let the car owner take a lot of time to pick the colors or paint
scheme. Typically an owner changes their mind a few times and we always paint a
test panel and provide it to let the owner really see the paint in various lights.
Once the donor car, performance requirements and body are reviewed we can start
to develop a cost estimate. Our interior work in house is limited to stock
replacement with moderate upgrades to materials and custom sound systems.
How long will it take:
A full car build start to finish can run 12 - 18 months depending on the complexity
of the build and condition of the donor car. We do not do this full time but
usually 40 - 50 hours a month or more during peek build periods. As part of our
service part of our website will be dedicated to your car. Each month we will put
up a new gallery of images with pictures documenting the work completed in the last
month.
